Erna Rosenstein. How to show unconscious?
A lecture dedicated to Erna Rosenstein, one of the most extraordinary figures of 20th century Polish art, is an invitation to deeply experience her work. Rosenstein's paintings, such as “Eternity gives birth to a moment,” are intriguing with their tangle of lines, play of light and shadow, and interpenetrating forms - balancing between reality and elusive abstraction. The artist created in the spirit of surrealism, combining elements of the subconscious, personal experiences and war tragedies. Her works, from paintings to assemblages, express melancholy, tension and a fascination with the creative process - an extremely important aspect of her work.
As a witness to the Holocaust and a victim of family tragedy, Erna sublimated her experiences into art full of emotional depth. Her work shows both echoes of trauma and a desire to explore the subconscious, which she expressed through organic, visionary forms. The lecture also explores the artist's extraordinary life - from her childhood in pre-war Poland, through her dramatic wartime fate, to her activities in the Cracow Group and years of resistance to Socialist Realist rigor. Let's explore her unique world.
Erna Rosenstein (born May 17, 1913 in Lviv, died November 10, 2004 in Warsaw) - Polish surrealist painter and poet of Jewish descent, associated with the Cracow Group. Sister of Paul Rosenstein-Rodan.
She studied at the Wiener Frauenakademie (1932-1934) and at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts under Wojciech Weiss (1934-1936), where she established contacts with the avant-garde, including Jonasz Stern. In 1937 she visited Paris, where she came into contact with Surrealism.
During World War II she hid under false names after escaping from the Lviv ghetto. After the war, she co-founded the resurgent Krakow Group. In 1949 she married Artur Sandauer, with whom she had a son, Adam Sandauer.
From 1972 she published poetry.
